NEXT Shabbat Rules

Below are the guidelines for how to register and host a NEXT Shabbat meal. For more detailed information, please read through our FAQs

HOSTING

In order to host a NEXT Shabbat meal, you must be a Taglit-Birthright Israel alumnus or former bus-staff (madrich or madricha) residing in the United States or Canada. Current employees of Taglit-Birthright Israel, Birthright Israel Foundation and Birthright Israel USA are also eligible to host NEXT Shabbat meals.  You may host one NEXT Shabbat meal every 30 days.

Current employees of Birthright Israel NEXT, as well as their immediate family members are not eligible to host NEXT Shabbat meals, with the exception of Birthright Israel NEXT employees working in the capacity of Local Director or Fellow. Local Directors and Fellows are eligible to host a NEXT Shabbat, but only on a reimbursement basis for costs actually incurred. Local Directors and Fellows eligible in this way may seek pre-approval for NEXT Shabbat-related costs on their Birthright Israel NEXT-issued debit card or other Birthright Israel NEXT-issued instrument.

REGISTRATION

You must register to host by Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. ET the week prior to your meal.

Steps to register and host a NEXT Shabbat meal 

  1. Register at www.birthrightisraelnext.org/shabbat.
  2. After you register you will be able to access your own personal Host Center on our website
  3. Print out your NEXT Shabbat Sign with your unique Shabbat sign number
  4. Take one picture with ALL of your guests (one excluded as photographer), your meal and the NEXT Shabbat sign. Be sure to include all guests in the photo, as you will only receive payment for these guests

Steps required to receive payment following your meal -

  1. Following your meal, you will receive an email prompting you to visit your Host Center
  2. At your Host Center, you will begin the payment process which will include submitting a Feedback Form and uploading your photo(s)

NOTE: If it is your practice to not take pictures on Shabbat, you must take a photo of your Shabbat preparations (e.g. your delicious food, set table—surprise us!) and your NEXT Shabbat Sign. You must also provide us with the names and email addresses or phone numbers of each guest for whom you wish to receive payment. There will be a designated space in the payment process for you to include this information—make sure to have the names and emails/phone numbers ready when requesting payment!

CHANGES AND CANCELLATIONS

All meal Date Changes and Cancellations may be done in your Host Center.

If you decide to change your meal date, you must change the date by Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. ET the week prior to your meal.

YOUR NEXT SHABBAT MEAL

  1. Must take place during Shabbat (Friday dinner, Saturday lunch, or Saturday meal for Havdallah, the ceremony marking the end of Shabbat)
  2. May NOT be held in a commercial venue (e.g., restaurant, bar, office, etc.)
  3. May NOT be held in conjunction with any organization (e.g., political, non-profit, etc.) and may NOT be held in any organization's work/meeting space
  4. May NOT be held as a fundraiser of any kind, except in conjunction with the NEXT Shabbat Food Drive
  5. Must be held in the United States or Canada

GUESTS

NEXT Shabbat meals must have a minimum of 4 people (including the host) over the age of twelve.

  1. You can host as many people as you’d like but we only pay for up to 16 people (including the host) over the age of twelve. The NEXT Shabbat program is offered to adults—we do not provide payment for guests under the adult age, as defined in the Jewish world by the age of Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
  2. NEXT Shabbat meals must be offered FREE of charge to guests (potlucks are great, but are not part of NEXT Shabbat).
  3. Guests cannot contribute anything to your meal, as we are providing the necessary means to support all meal costs.
  4. We do encourage you to participate in our NEXT Shabbat Food Driveand ask your guests to bring canned food to donate.

PAYMENT FOR YOUR NEXT SHABBAT MEAL

As of July 1, 2010: For your first three NEXT Shabbat meals, Birthright Israel NEXT pays up to $14 per person for at least four and up to sixteen people, including the host. For all subsequent meals (your fourth meal and on), Birthright Israel NEXT will pay up to $10 per person for at least four and up to sixteen people.

For host that have held at least three meals prior to July 1, 2010: Any meal registered after July 1 will only be eligible for a payment of $10 per guest. If a host has held less than three meals, any meal registered after July 1 will be eligible for a payment of up to $14 through your third meal.

Birthright Israel NEXT reserves the right to request and review your receipts before sending payment, and to pay based on those actual expenses.

You must complete and submit your Feedback Form and photo (s) within two weeks of your NEXT Shabbat meal. You can expect to receive a check via mail within six weeks of submitting your Feedback Form and photo.

Failure to comply with the NEXT Shabbat Rules may result in your denial of payment and disqualification from future participation in the NEXT Shabbat Program. These NEXT Shabbat Rules and the terms and conditions of the NEXT Shabbat Program are subject to change at any time. Any and all such changes shall be at Birthright Israel NEXT's sole discretion.

  4. • Submit your receipts to Moishe House by using the designated URL provided upon completing the Feedback Form.

BLOG POSTS AND PHOTOS

Any blog posts written on the Moishe House Blog or photos taken relating to a NEXT Shabbat meal may be used for NEXT Shabbat marketing, advertising and promotional purposes.

PAYMENT FOR YOUR NEXT SHABBAT MEAL

Birthright Israel NEXT pays up to $15 per person for at least four and up to sixteen people, including the host. Additionally, you must complete and submit your Feedback Form and photo(s) within two weeks of your NEXT Shabbat meal.

There is no direct reimbursement to individual houses provided by Birthright Israel NEXT. All reimbursements will be provided through Moishe House. Please contact your Moishe House representative for all questions regarding payment.

Failure to comply with the NEXT Shabbat Rules may result in your denial of payment and disqualification from future participation in the NEXT Shabbat Program.
