Purim Shabbat
Hosted by: Robert C. Brooklyn, NY

Purim is the celebration, like most holidays, of our triumph over evil. In the ancient kingdom of Persia a plot ensued that called for the annihilation of the Jewish people. The king Ahasuerus was hoodwinked into believing an assassination plot was masterminded by a Jew, and so called for the destruction of all Jews in his land. He was duped into this by his Prime Minister Haman. His queen, Queen Esther, was Jewish (secretly) and through her determination saved her people and enlightened the King as to Haman's nefarious plot, sending him to the gallows. (This is a very brief synopsis)

So in order to celebrate this holiday, you read the story from the Book of Esther, which we did. The most important part is when Haman's name is called you must create a lot of noise, specifically using a groger, or noisemaker. This is great because it gets the audience involved. As a famous rabbi once was quoted saying, "On the day of Purim you must celebrate to the point where you are no longer able to distinguish between the good deeds of Mordachai (protagonaist) and the evil deeds of Haman (antagonist). Celebrate means booze it up. The other highlight is Purim can be interpreted as a type of Jewish Halloween. Get everyone dressed up as we did. It proves to be good times for all.
