Harvest of Hope Shabbat BBQ
Hosted by: Jonathan R. Pompano Beach, FL

Last March, a group of friends and I attended the first annual Harvest of Hope music festival, a charity benefit that provides emergency funds to migrant farm workers and their families. At HOH we camped for three days outside the fest along with thousands of only the most diehard music-lovers. I trucked a grill 300 miles up to the St. Augustine campground and served up fresh food Saturday morning to any and all strung-out campers who needed a break from the perpetual party. A lot of people were amazed when I told them the food was sponsored by a Jewish organization, and from there we sparked all sorts of interesting conversation about the meaning of Shabbat, Jewish philosophy, and the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. I think a big reason people felt so comfortable in hanging out was the unpretentious approach, and I'm sure the free food helped a little too. Overall a lot of people came out knowing far more about Judaism and Israel than before they sat down to munch and chat, and it felt amazing to have been the vehicle for sharing that insight.
